Hawke's Bay may have had only three batsmen get themselves into double figures in their Chapple Cup senior men's cricket match with Wairarapa at Rathkeale College yesterday but it was enough to give them a handsome 68-run victory.
It was first drop James De Terte who did most of the damage for the visitors. Taking advantage of some tardy Wairarapa catching-he was put down at least twice- he came in with the Bay at 17-1 and when he departed they were 214-8.
De Terte's innings was a mixture of aggression and patience with his knock including 14 fours and 33 singles.
Opener Paul Hannan struck three fours in his 44 and was involved in a 94-run partnership for the second wicket with De Terte while the only other Bay player to make double figures in their 50-over tally of 227-8 was R.Johnston who made 12.
Paceman Hayden Spierling spearheaded the Wairarapa attack. He bowled tidily throughout his 10 overs and finished with the respectable figures of 3-25. Graeme Williams and Shane Mellor took two wickets apiece but both conceded more than 50 runs from their 10 overs.
Wairarapa looked promisingly enough placed at 74-3, but failed to capitalise and were all out for 159.
The hard-hitting Aaron Bidlake was sent in as opener and top scored with 33, a knock which included two sixes and three fours.
John Peters (24) and Chris Jefferies (21) made handy contributions with both of them hitting three fours.
The depth of talent in the Hawke's Bay bowling ranks was illustrated by the fact five of the six bowlers used picked up two wickets each, including former Wairarapa rep Marc Calkin.
Hawke's Bay also won the senior B match played at Rathkeale by 66 runs and here too their victory was mainly due to a top order batsman.
Opener C Davies made 109 of the Bay's 207 and his innings included 12 fours and three sixes. Next highest scorer was G.Diack with 26.
Bowling for Wairarapa B Seth Rance took 3-27 from his 10 overs and Ben Hundermark 2-40.
Wairarapa were in deep strife at 62-7 when they batted but some lusty hitting from tail-enders Dane Buchanan (24 not out), Simon Clinton-Baker (25) and Choi Jackson (16) got them through to 141. Buchanan struck two fours, Clinton-Baker four fours and one six and Jackson three fours.
