Bay of Plenty State Highway remains closed following weather damage

A Bay of Plenty State Highway remains closed this morning after yesterday's deluge caused flooding and slips.

The NZTA said there was serious flooding and slips at Matata between Arawa St and Otamaraku Valley Road.

The eastern highway was closed from the junction of State Highway 2 and 33 at Paengaroa to the junction of State Highway 30 at Awakeri.

The road closed just after 7pm last night.

A detour route was available to motorists along State Highway 30 and 33.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said contractors would be heading to the highway to clear the slips and hoped to have one lane open around 10am.

Update: SH2 Matata is still closed due to slips. Contractors are back on site and hoping to have one lane open around 10am. ^LC
