A regional airport for the Bay of Plenty is a step closer after Environment Bay of Plenty's decision to start an in-depth study that could become the blueprint for building a new airport at Paengaroa, 32km southeast of Tauranga.
A study issued in December last year concluded that the economic benefits to Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty were sufficient to justify the relocation of Tauranga Airport.
The 15 to 20-year plan for a Paengaroa regional airport would turn the 225ha Tauranga Airport into an industrial park and solve airspace problems restricting the growth of the container terminal at Sulphur Point.
