As fighting and terror sweep Iraq and aid workers flee, a Tauranga couple are doing the opposite -- heading into the danger zone.
Against government advice Joe and Chanel Medwin are flying to Jordan in a week on the first stage of a year-long adventure in Iraq, where they plan to join Operation Mercy an organisation helping to help rebuild the community in Iraq.
The couple made the decision to go to Iraq last September when the country was much less dangerous. Recent reports of foreigner kidnappings and gunbattles did not sway them.
Meanwhile the Government has repeatedly warned New Zealanders not to travel to Iraq.
The Medwins were apprehensive about joining Operation Mercy but were also excited about a journey they hoped would be "great fun".
"We just want to make a positive difference," Mrs Medwin said.
"We want to help these people and show our love to them," her husband added.
Mr Medwin, 26, is a mechanical engineer and will be working on a project to improve water facilities.
Mrs Medwin, 25, is an intensive care nurse and will use her skills to care for handicapped children.
The Medwins are keen to meet their new local community at their new address in Shamiya, south of Baghdad.
The couple will rely on the support of family, friends and church groups to fund the $2000 a month the mission will cost.
They have organised return airfares a year from now but are open to the idea of staying longer.
"There is probably enough work there for us for the rest of our lives," Mrs Medwin said.
