Hawkes Bay Airport is likely to have a runway capable of handling passenger jets by the 2011 rugby World Cup.
Airport chairman John Palairet said the board had recommended to shareholders that it wanted to tender for a runway extension that would initially accommodate medium-sized jet aircraft for domestic and charter activities.
The proposed $6 million project would stretch the runway from 1310m to 1750m.
