The answer is still to be found but the battle is on in earnest to come up with a suitable home ground for Wairarapa's premier soccer club, Wairarapa United, in the Masterton area.
Masterton Mayor Garry Daniell yesterday delivered on a promise to organise a meeting with himself, Masterton District Council chief executive Wes ten Hove and Wairarapa United chairman Phil Keinzley to discuss "several options" and all parties were happy with what transpired. "Obviously we were never going to come up with a solution right away but there was a strong consensus that something had to be done and we will be working hard to provide a positive outcome," Mr Daniell said. "We understand the problems Wairarapa United have been having this season and we are keen to ensure things work a lot more smoothly in the future."
Phil Keinzley described the atmosphere at yesterday's meeting as "very cordial" and expressed pleasure at the keenness shown by both Mr Daniell and Mr ten Hove to guarantee Wairarapa United a home ground which provided the necessary requirements for matches up to Central League level.
"We went through a number of different scenarios and they all have their unique complications but the chances of coming up with what we need certainly look a lot better now than they did before," he said.
Whether the latest turn of events will encourage Keinzley to rethink his intentions to resign as chairman of Wairarapa United and coach of their Central League side because of the council's previous inaction at remedying ground condition hassles at the Pugh Sports Bowl is, however, unclear.
"Obviously the fact we seem to be getting somewhere at last is encouraging but, quite honestly, I haven't really thought that far ahead," Keinzley said yesterday. "Right now it's all about sorting out the present hassles, that's the most important thing."
Meanwhile, Wairarapa United will be without their assertive midfielder Miriek Tvaroh in their Central League fixture with Miramar Rangers at Centennial Park, Miramar, on Saturday.
Tvaroh picked up his fifth yellow card in Wairarapa United's stunning 3-2 win over Petone at Hullena Park last Sunday and that means an automatic one-game suspension.
Keinzley intends to replace Tvaroh by moving the in-form Adam Cowan from right half to central midfield and putting promising Rathkeale College player Kote Maeno in Cowan's position. Wairarapa United will go into Saturday's match on the back of three successive wins but they will need to play every bit as well as they did against Petone to head off a Miramar Rangers side which sits second behind Western Suburbs on the points table.
Keinzley believes the big test for Wairarapa United will be in containing a Miramar Rangers attack led by the top goal scorer in the central league, Dominc Rowe, and All White midfielder Andy Barron.
And they are also understood to now have a former Manchester United seconds team player in their attacking line-up as well.
"They are the sort of team who can launch attacks from anywhere and we have to be constantly aware of that," Keinzley said. "We were very solid in that regard against Petone and we need more of the same here."
