A constable was in Taupo Hospital last night after being knocked unconscious by a drunk driver.
The 59-year-old suffered concussion and serious cuts in the attack around 3.30pm yesterday on SH1, south of Turangi.
He had breath-tested a 22-year-old driver, who then knocked him unconscious. The attacker ran towards heavy bush near the Tongariro River, but was found later by a police dog.
He will appear in court this morning.
