Former broadcaster and gardening enthusiast Maggie Barry is putting her name forward for the National Party nomination in the Botany byelection.
Ms Barry, who left her Radio Live position late last year because she "wanted more flexibility to travel and write and do other things", confirmed this afternoon that she wanted to be an MP.
"I think the party has the credentials to lead the country out of the recession, and I feel I have a contribution to make as a member of parliament."
She joins a dozen other names seeking the selection in a safe National seat.
Nominations for the National Party selection close at midday tomorrow.
Party general manager Greg Hamilton said it typically took about three weeks to choose a candidate.
Others reported to be interested in running for National in the March 5 by-election include Elim Christian College teacher Darron Gedge, real estate agent Youngshin Watkins and lawyer Ken Yee.
Former Labour Party member and Auckland Council local board member Daniel Newman, Auckland super-city councillor Jami-Less Ross, former Auckland councillor Aaron Bhatnagar and National Party office holders Ram Rai and Denise Crum are also reported to be interested.
The seat was vacated by Pansy Wong, who resigned following revelations her husband Sammy misused the Parliamentary travel perk.
