The driver of this truck learned an embarrassing lesson about railway crossing safety when he was caught underneath a barrier arm at Mount Maunganui on Thursday morning.
The driver overshot the intersection at the rail crossing at Hull Rd and Maunganui Rd about 10.25am and he suddenly found himself trapped by the barrier arm that came down on the back of his truck.
When he reversed the truck, the arm was yanked back with it - and he had to wait until the train rattled by just metres away from his cab. A witness, queued in a vehicle behind, thought it was "a bit odd" when he saw the lights and bells activate up ahead but no barrier come down.
"I thought, the bells are on but I wonder why the barrier arm hasn't come down, so I raced up the queue to have a look. Sure enough, the barrier arm had come down on top of the truck."
EnviroWaste Services operations manager Ian Boult said the driver had informed him of the incident, which he was now investigating.
