Michael Barnett has withdrawn from the race to be a councillor in the Auckland Super City.
The high profile head of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce intended to stand for the Waitemata and Gulf Ward but is pulling out because of health reasons.
Mr Barnett told nzherald.co.nz he would continue to hold his roles with the Chamber but would not seek re-election.
He said he would also remain the deputy chairman of the Auckland Regional Council until the end of his term.
"In the next three to six months I have some bigger challenges ahead of me than re-election," Mr Barnett said.
ARC chairman Mike Lee said described Mr Barnett as loyal and supportive as well as praising his work in economic development.
"Although Michael and I have different political views, we have a good personal and effective working relationship. Our council has been united by a passion for Auckland.
"On behalf of ARC councillors and staff, I would like to extend our support to Michael as he faces this personal challenge," Mr Lee said.
Citizens & Ratepayers president John Slater said Mr Barnett's withdrawal was a significant loss to the party.
"His experience, skills and contribution have been at a high level for almost nine years in local government, especially in the areas of economic development and transport."
Mr Slater said Mr Barnett has bigger challenges to deal with over the next few months, which meant he needed time out from his political career.
"Citizens & Ratepayers express our very best wishes to Michael and his family in the time ahead."
