Barbecue world first

Talkback host Pat Brittenden is inviting Kiwis to celebrate Waitangi Day by joining his "virtual BBQ" on Twitter.

The Newstalk ZB broadcaster hopes up to 10,000 New Zealanders follow his Tweets throughout the day.

Brittenden said the Twitter-BQ was a "world first".

"I've already had messages from people saying things such as, 'I'll bring the virtual steak sauce, and you can bring the sausages."'

The 36-year-old will be posting from his iPhone while enjoying a fry-up with friends.

He hopes the event will act as a rallying call for New Zealanders to reclaim their national day from negativity.

His Waitangi Day has attracted followers from as far as Britain.
