Playing music without a public performance licence cost a Palmerston North bar almost $3500, including a licence fee.
The case was brought in the Palmerston North District Court against the Shamrock Inn by Phonographic Performances, the licensing arm of the Recording Industry Association, after the owner failed to obtain the licence.
"This sends a very clear message to businesses," said Phonographic Performances licensing and business development manager Mark Roach.
