John Banks is being tipped as Act's Tamaki candidate in the general election this year.
The Herald understands the former Auckland City mayor is looking at standing in either Tamaki or Epsom, but Tamaki is believed to be the favoured option.
Yesterday Mr Banks continued to be circumspect about his political future, saying he had not even decided whether to return to national politics.
Mr Banks was National's Whangarei MP from 1981 to 1999 and is a former Minister of Police.
Officially, Act has selected Ken Shirley to stand in Tamaki, but this can be changed. Mr Banks will be a guest speaker at this weekend's Act Party conference in Auckland.
