A mystery man snapped measuring the width of an ATM machine in Dargaville was doing legitimate work for the bank, it has been revealed.
The man was featured on the Herald's front page yesterday, after no one at the National Bank could say who he was or what he was doing.
Security footage of the man was passed on to the police, who in turn passed it on to the media after they could not establish any leads.
But a National Bank spokesman yesterday said the man had been doing work for the bank and there had been "a communications mix-up".
The incident happened on June 17 between 7.30pm and 8pm, when the footage showed the man taking precise measurements before noting down his findings on a clipboard.
Bank staff have since apologised to the man and the company he was working for.
