Bali sentence labelled 'sickening' after NZers death

A Bali barman has been jailed for six months for his part in the death of a holidaying New Zealander.

Palmerston North's Sean Headifen, 22, a former soldier, died after a Bali bar brawl in April this year. The brawl started over a $5 cocktail at the Bounty Disco in Kuta.

Barman Nengah Mustika, who threw a fishbowl glass at Mr Headifen's head, has been convicted and sentenced for his part in the assault, the Manawatu Standard reported.

Nani Aplonius Efson Tafui and top Indonesian kickboxer Andreas Seran, who allegedly repeatedly punched and kicked Mr Headifen while other people held his hands behind his back, are still awaiting trial.

Mr Headifen's girlfriend Sarah Whitburn, 19, labelled the six-month sentence "sickening".

"For smuggling drugs into the country you get hung or shot or jailed for life."

Mr Headifen's mother, Merrill Headifen of Levin, said the sentence was unjust.

"We're in shock, we're disgusted, we're devastated.

She called for a harsher sentences for Tafui and Seran.

"They deserve life because they took away a beautiful boy."
