KEY POINTS:
Murder accused David Bain is shifting out of the home of long-time supporter Joe Karam and resuming university studies he started in prison.
The move signals his desire to get on with his life while waiting for the retrial on charges of murdering five members of his family, Mr Karam said yesterday.
Once a change to his bail conditions is formalised, Bain will flat with another long-time supporter, Deborah Read, in west Auckland.
Bain was bailed in May after serving almost 13 years, following the quashing of his convictions by the Privy Council law lords in London. They ordered a retrial, which solicitor-general David Collins agreed to in late June.
Since his release, Bain has been living at Mr Karam's Te Kauwhata property.
Although the retrial is set down for May, Mr Karam said it was possible the trial would not take place for more than a year. The defence team was still waiting on the crown evidence, which was possibly still a month away.
"David is half way through an engineering degree in CAD and so he said he might as well use that time to go and finish his degree."
He said he was working full time on preparing the defence, and was often out of town visiting witnesses, leaving Bain by himself a lot of the time. Both were sorry to see their time in Te Kauwhata come to an end.
"He's thoroughly enjoyed it, and I've thoroughly enjoyed having him here," Mr Karam said.
