David Bain is back home after three months abroad - but he is believed to be planning to return to Europe for good.
Relaxing at the North Waikato home of supporter Joe Karam yesterday, the 37-year-old appeared relaxed, slightly tanned and jet-lagged.
"I caught up with friends from the past - friends I made pre-all these events - and rekindled friendships. They're people who have always been supportive and friendly," he said.
Bain was acquitted through retrial on June 5 for murdering his parents, sister and brother in their Dunedin home in 1994. He served 13 years in prison before the Privy Council overturned his original conviction.
Bain, who arrived back on Thursday night, would not talk in depth about what countries he visited. But the Herald on Sunday understands he travelled to the United Kingdom and also spent time in Greece.
Karam said Bain will stay with him and his partner for "a few weeks" in Te Kauwhata.
"He's been considering his options, looking into studying classics and drama and thinking about different job opportunities," Karam said.
"He's staying here with Lisa and myself while he works out his next move - unpacking bags, going through his duty free ..."
"...And handing out a few presents," Bain added.
Karam previously said Bain was able to take the trip through "the generosity of others" and bought a return fare for $5000, which allowed part of the trip to be flown in business class.
Bain would not divulge whether his plans include going back overseas.
"I wanted some space and time away," said Bain. "And time away from the media."
Friends of Bain have told the Herald on Sunday he believed his future lay overseas.
Karam said Bain's return was not about helping the bid for compensation but confirmed work was going on behind the scenes.
Bain's defence lawyer Michael Reed QC also refused to comment on the topic of compensation, or the prospect of a coronial inquest into the deaths of the members of Bain's family.
