A gang leader facing trial for a key role in the biggest drugs ring to operate in New Zealand prisons has had his bail conditions altered - so he can go swimming.
Ulaiasi "Rocky" Pulete, 42, has been allowed by the court to leave his Balmoral home each weekday afternoon for a swim at the Mt Eden pool.
Pulete is on electronic bail awaiting trial on charges relating to police allegations that a multi-million dollar methamphetamine importation ring was run from Paremoremo Prison.
The Herald on Sunday has learned that Pulete asked the court for special permission to have his electronic tracker disconnected for a few hours each weekday afternoon, citing the need to exercise because of obesity.
Prosecutor Bruce Northwood said the Crown opposed the application.
Mt Eden pool staff said Pulete was a regular visitor and had a friendly manner. He started his visits by buying a concession card for regular, cheaper swimming but had recently appeared to drop the exercise regime.
"He's quite a big guy ... unusually big," said one. "He was coming in but hasn't been in for a month or so."
