Within minutes of being released on bail Jayden Haoni Te Whaiti had breached his bail conditions.
The 26-year-old Pahiatua man, facing a charge of breaching a protection order, was bailed by Judge Tom Broadmore on Tuesday morning in the Masterton District Court but after the court lunch break was backbefore the judge facing another breach of protection charge and one of breaching bail.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Garry Wilson told the court as soon as Te Whaiti was released he went across to the police station where he used the telephone to call his former partner, who he had been ordered not to make contact with.
"Police overheard the call," he said.
The woman answered the phone because it showed the number was a blocked call and wouldn't have done so had she known it was Te Whaiti, Mr Wilson said. "She told him not to call and hung up straight away."
Duty lawyer Louise Elder told the court her client only made the call because his former partner had his money and cellphone recharger. "He was not abusive and only wanted his things," she said.
Judge Broadmore told Te Whaiti if he needed his things he must get his lawyer, police or victims advisor to contact his former-partner. He granted Te Whaiti bail with a final warning.
