A 19-year-old who allegedly shot a man in the face with a pellet gun at point-blank range was released on bail after an appearance in the Christchurch District Court today.
Police say Daniel Michael Speer was caught on camera walking away from the scene of the shooting in Hereford Street, central Christchurch, in the early hours of Sunday, August 29.
Crime surveillance camera images showing the attacker and a woman he was with were published on the internet yesterday, and police say Daniel Michael Speer then came to the police station.
Police said they had also received numerous calls from the public identifying the couple.
Speer was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to his 29-year-old victim.
The victim was recovering well from what police believed was a random attack, but would need further surgery after a pellet was removed from his eye, police said.
Judge Brian Callaghan remanded Speer on bail to September 28. He set a curfew of 7am to 7pm, and said Speer was not to enter licenced premises while on bail.
