A Featherston builder alleged to have set fire to his own home has been granted bail despite police opposition.
Timothy John Grindlay, 38, appeared before Judge Jill Moss in Masterton District Court seeking bail on a charge of arson. The charge relates to an incident in the early hours of December 2 when 24 Revans St, owned by Grindlay and his wife, was set ablaze about 5.30am.
The property was gutted by the fire and Grindlay was allegedly found by police a short distance away. The court was told Grindlay and his wife were estranged.
At the time police said it was a domestic incident.
In court yesterday, lawyer Peter Stevens said his client wasn't a risk to the community and could be managed on strict bail conditions.
