A man who shocked police with a rant about his meat pie when arrested for allegedly attacking his sleeping stepson with a screwdriver and a wheelbrace has been released on bail.
Police say Rex Kipa, 45, cut the power to his 25-year-old stepson's home then attacked him.
Kipa had been in custody since his arrest but Justice Mark Cooper granted him bail under strict conditions at a hearing in the High Court at Auckland.
When arrested, Kipa reportedly pleaded with police officers to let him finish eating his meat pie. He appears again on May 19.
