KEY POINTS:
Bail has been denied for the man accused of killing police dog Enzo.
Tairyn Murphy, 27, labourer, was subdued in the dock when he appeared in Tauranga District Court late yesterday afternoon, in contrast to his first brief appearance on Friday when he called loudly to supporters in the back of the courtroom.
Murphy stood accused before Judge Thomas Ingram of unlawfully killing a police dog and resisting arrest last Thursday. Other earlier charges he faces are two counts of assaulting a female (in one case with a screwdriver), two of theft and a breach of release conditions.
One of the theft charges relates to $56.45 from a Tauranga City Council parking meter on June 25.
Lawyer Nicholas Dutch said no pleas would be entered yet because he had not received full disclosure from the prosecution.
However, Murphy had told the lawyer he was in the process of giving himself up when he was arrested after a massive police search - during which three-year-old german shepherd Enzo lost his life, in the lower Kaimai Ranges.
Murphy was walking through a farm field toward a road where police cars were parked, intending to hand himself over, said Mr Dutch.
Prosecutor, Sergeant Wayne Hunter denied the claim.
"He wasn't giving himself up, he was running off and a police officer tackled him."
Mr Hunter said Murphy "resisted violently" and other officers helped restrain him.
Judge Ingram remanded him in custody until next Monday.
Police have yet to confirm that Enzo drowned during the seven-hour search for Murphy.
