KEY POINTS:
Two men were arrested yesterday after a high-speed 20km chase down the Southern Motorway.
The chase began at 8.45am when a police patrol saw a man on foot chasing a car down Beach Rd in the central city.
The man's bag had been snatched moments before, said Sergeant Callum McNeill.
The man and his family were tourists from Singapore and had been in the country three days.
Police ordered the car to stop but it took off towards the south.
It drove over police spikes as it left the motorway at Market Rd.
It re-entered the motorway at Ellerslie with one flat tyre, continuing on to Otara, where the driver lost control and hit a median barrier.
At least five police cars were involved in the chase.
Mr McNeill said no members of the public were injured during the 13-minute pursuit but a police officer received a "minor hand injury" during the arrest.
The men have been charged with burglary, theft, reckless driving and failing to stop and will appear in the Auckland District Court today.
