It's been a bad weekend on the roads around the south.
A middle-aged man is dead after his car ended up in the Poolburn dam lake in Central Otago. It's believed the vehicle went into the lake about 1am this morning.
Police believe the man was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Police are not ruling out that alcohol was a contributing factor.
Meanwhile two vehicles carrying foreign nationals crashed head on on the Te Anau to Milford Highway early yesterday morning.
Police say two Germans were in one rental vehicle, three Chinese nationals were in the other vehicle. One female was airlifted to Southland Hospital, while the others had minor injuries.
