An engine malfunction has put the Cook Strait ferry Aratere out of action, just in time for the Christmas rush.
Tranz Rail is putting on extra sailings of the Lynx fast ferry to help deal with passengers booked on the Aratere.
The company says holiday makers and their cars will be given priority, with freight being redirected to other shippers to free up space.
The Lynx will make an additional third sailing tonight and tomorrow night.
Tranz Rail says people booked on sailings this week should report to the interisland terminals as normal.
Passengers will be advised at the terminal when they are sailing.
The company is asking people not to call its reservations centre.
The Aratere is expected to be back in service on Friday.
