A Carterton woman has braved a buzz cut and shorn off her locks for cancer.
A crowd of well-wishers and supporters gathered at the Headquarters salon in Carterton on Tuesday to watch Hayley Burgess shave off her hair to raise money for Shave for a Cure, which is run by the national charity dedicated to supporting people living with blood cancer.
A receptionist at Carterton District Council, Mrs Burgess said over the years she had known many people with cancer and it "was just one thing I thought I could do to help others out".
Mrs Burgess, who said she had not cut her hair for a "long time", planned to sell her 37cm-long hair to a wig company and donate the money to the cause.
Although planning on wearing scarves and hats through the hot Wairarapa summer, Mr Burgess said she was not displeased with her new look, which "felt so much lighter".
