KEY POINTS:
Korean backpacker murder accused Shannon Brent Flewellen winked at friends as he stood handcuffed in the dock at Westport District Court this morning.
Flewellen entered no plea to murdering Jae Hyeon Kim at Charleston on the West Coast between September 29 and October 22, 2003 and was remanded in custody to reappear on July 24.
Flewellen's co-accused, a 31-year-old unemployed former Westport man, did not appear. Police declined to say why.
Duty solicitor Doug Taffs did not seek bail for Flewellen and said it was "too problematic" to consider a depositions date at this time.
Flewellen was in the dock for less than two minutes. Around 10 uniformed and plain clothes police boosted court security.
Shaven headed, with heavy tattoos around his neck, Flewellen glanced towards the public gallery several times.
As he was stood down he turned to his associates in the public gallery and said: "Have a good day, come and visit."
