On average five children a year are killed by cars driving on private driveways. These are deeply traumatic accidents as the driver is almost always someone who knows the child, usually a parent.

The Herald on Sunday is teaming up with Safe Kids on a new campaign to raise public awareness. New studies show the risk of injury is reduced when properties are designed with driveway safety in mind.

You can make a difference by writing to your local council requesting safer design guidelines in the annual plan. Young lives would be saved by separate entry points for pedestrians and vehicles, fencing children's play areas off from vehicle areas and building garages close to the road rather than at the back of sections.
