KEY POINTS:
The parents of a baby boy whose care and death at a Christchurch hospital are under police investigation have praised the "awesome" hospital staff.
Finn Stewart Greig died at Christchurch Women's Hospital 11 days after his birth, in the arms of his parents Jason and Lolita Greig.
He was farewelled at a funeral service in Christchurch yesterday.
Police have launched an investigation into the pregnancy, labour, birth and care of the child on behalf of the coroner.
They have not ruled out laying charges. Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey told the Herald: "Every investigation may well have a criminal side to it".
Finn's parents published both birth and death notices for their son yesterday. He was born on June 28 at 12.02am, weighing 7lb 7oz and 51cm long, and died on Monday afternoon.
"Sadly, after a brave wee fight our man passed away in our arms," the couple said. "Our heartfelt thanks to the awesome team at Christchurch Women's Hospital and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit."
They also thanked their midwife "whose support throughout this difficult time has been outstanding".
Coroner Richard McElrea told the Herald the police inquiries did not relate in any way to the care provided by Mr and Mrs Greig.
Police would not comment on any details of the death.
