Police are investigating how a seven-month-old baby girl drowned in the bath at her home at the weekend.
Police were called to the home in Stoke, Nelson, about 11.30am on Saturday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne McCoy said he was reluctant to release more information about the death until all family members had been spoken to, but the death was not thought to be suspicious.
"A baby's died in tragic circumstances and that's about all I'm prepared to say," he told the Nelson Mail. "It's a tragedy."
A post-mortem examination was carried out on Sunday and the matter had been referred to the coroner.
The baby's 27-year-old father and 26-year-old mother were at home during the time of the drowning.
