KEY POINTS:
A three-month-old baby girl has died in a Gisborne car accident which left her mother, father and great aunt all seriously injured.
Police said the tragedy happened about 6am today, when the car left the road and crashed into a tree during torrential rain, at the intersection of Matawai and Farmer Roads, north of the city.
The baby died at the scene and her 29-year-old mother has been flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.
The baby's great aunt is in intensive care in Gisborne Hospital and the baby's father, who was driving the car, is stable in Gisborne Hospital.
The two women had to be cut free from the wrecked vehicle.
Police said the family had driven from Huntly to help the baby's grandparents whose car had broken down out the outskirts of Opotiki.
They had then followed behind the grandparents car, heading towards Gisborne, to ensure there were no further problems.
They had almost reached their destination when the accident happened.
