Police in Invercargill are investigating an incident which has left a baby with critical head injuries.
A 13-year-old boy has admitted to shaking the seven-month-old girl on Tuesday night. She was flown to Starship Hospital in Auckland on Wednesday where she received surgery for a brain bleed.
She is understood to now be in a critical condition.
Police say the boy is a relative of the girl and, because of his age, will not face criminal charges if the baby survices.
The boy is believed to now be in the care of Child, Youth and Family.
