A Northland coroner has warned against the danger of parents sharing a bed with their babies after a 6-month-old girl died lying asleep next to her father.
Coroner Max Atkins held an inquest in Whangarei into the death of Kyla Maree Hoani.
He found she had died on December 11 last year from no demonstrable cause, although accidental suffocation could not be ruled out.
The overall features of the death were consistent with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
The baby's father, Vallen Hoani, gave evidence that his daughter had been born in May, two months premature, and had suffered bronchial problems as a result.
The night Kyla died, he had been sleeping with her on the top level of a bunk bed.
Mr Atkins said he laid no blame with Mr Hoani for the tragic death.
