The identities of the mothers of Hastings' two abandoned dead babies remain a mystery after initial DNA test results from women involved in the police investigation.
Hastings CIB head Detective Senior Sergeant Sam Aberahama said results of 15 tests by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) had proven "negative", and those women had been removed from the list of possibilities in the investigation of the death of Baby Aaron, a premature boy found in a Raureka sewer line on January 24.
It was about half the number of women from whom samples were taken in the search for the mothers of Aaron and Baby Moses, a newborn full-term baby found in a garden off Heretaunga Street East on January 4.
Police hope to receive the results of the remaining tests before the end of the month.
Neither of the mothers has been found, despite repeated appeals by police and medical authorities for them to seek help.
Police also believe a second person must have assisted in the birth of Baby Aaron.
