The Martinborough winners of the Ballance Farm Environment Awards are hosting a field day on Friday, from 12.30pm to 4pm.
Dan and Reidun Nicholson farm sheep and beef cattle at Tokaroa Farm, which consists of 607ha of hill country in the Ponatahi Valley - including about 110ha of crops including plantain, clovers and pasja. Judges praised the couple's management structure and community and industry involvement.
Also recognised are the couple's use of science and research for innovation, knowledge of soil types and their many tree plantings - including poplars for erosion, shade and fodder, and a 14ha fenced stand of kanuka and manuka now underplanted with natives.
