KEY POINTS:
Ray Avery was today named patron of the Non-resident Nepali Association of New Zealand, filling a role held by Sir Edmund Hillary before his death.
Mr Avery is a scientist who founded and runs New Zealand-based international charity Medicine Mondiale.
"For the past 16 years, Ray Avery has worked tirelessly to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Nepal. His appointment as patron of our society reflects the respect which the people of Nepal hold for Mr Ray," said association president Baburaja Maharjan.
