Autopsy will reveal how security guard died

Police will decide tomorrow whether to upgrade the investigation into the death of a 21-year-old security guard at a West Auckland construction site to a homicide.

Charanpreet Dhaliwal was found bloodied and dead at the site in Henderson about 3am on Friday.

His workmates discovered his body when they went there to get a vehicle. He was lying near the site office.

Police said there were obvious signs of injury, but it was too early to say whether they were suspicious or accidental.

Detective Sergeant Eugene Pickett told Radio New Zealand last night that officers had been interviewing people in relation to Mr Dhaliwal's death.

He said it was possible the Indian citizen died after a workplace accident, but foul play had not been ruled out.

Police are waiting for the post- mortem examination results, due late today, before they decide how to proceed.

Police want to hear from anyone in the area who saw or heard anything unusual and officers are reviewing CCTV footage.

It was Mr Dhaliwal's first night working as a security guard and he was on duty alone at the Fulton Hogan site near the new Northwestern Motorway bridge off Lincoln Rd.

He was living in Papatoetoe with friends, who helped police to contact his devastated family in India.
