One of Australia's top universities is recruiting bright New Zealand students because the federal Government will provide funding for them.
Australian National University director of student recruiting Tim Beckett and colleagues were on a recruiting drive in Wellington yesterday.
"The main reason we are here is the quality of your students," Mr Beckett said. "The second reason is that New Zealand students are classified as home students. If we enrol a Kiwi we get Australian Government funding."
New Zealand citizens were also eligible for Australian Government scholarships, he said.
After talking with ANU representatives yesterday Victoria University law student Mike Ducray said he was contemplating finishing his degree in Australia.
"I'm wanting to make Australia my home one day. If I could finish my degree over there it will be a real bonus."
Mr Beckett and his team will be in Christchurch today before returning to Canberra.
