There was an emotional farewell for the Australian policing units in Christchurch this afternoon.
Police Commissioner Howard Broad, Superintendent Dave Cliff, and Australian Commander Superintendent Gavan Ryan all spoke of the closer ties between the various units.
Commissioner Broad said all police involved in the earthquake aftermath have carved a piece of history for themselves.
He said today's farewell was also important to officially thank the Australian contingent for the immense contribution to Christchurch people.
"To get, you've got to give and New Zealand has an admirable record of offering assistance and when we needed help, look how willingly it was given to us. That was payback in spades," he said.
All Australian police were presented with a piece of pounamu and a certificate.
