A New Zealander who has lain in a grave without a headstone for more than half a century has been given one by former Australian soldiers.
Captain "Tip" Broughton, a veteran of the Boer War and both world wars, died in 1955, aged 70, and was buried in Fawkner cemetery in Melbourne, the Age newspaper reported.
Yesterday his grave was marked with a A$5500 ($6300) headstone organised by returned soldiers in Australia, after former journalist Keith Hooper lobbied the New Zealand Government for a proper veteran's white headstone. It sent only a plaque.
