KEY POINTS:
A 58-year-old man arrested at Melbourne Airport, preparing to board a plane for New Zealand, is alleged to have been planning to leave Australia in the wake of a fatal car crash, the ABC reports.
The man was charged last month with failing to stop after an alleged hit-run in the Melbourne suburb of Deer Park, when truck driver John Martin, 35, was struck by a 4WD on the Western Highway while walking home from an engagement party.
The driver of the 4WD fled the scene and two other vehicles swerved around Mr Martin's body, before a motorist stopped.
Police reported that the headlight glass indicated Mr Martin had been struck by a 100 series Land Cruiser, and the driver of the vehicle would have been fully aware he had struck Mr Martin.
The Deer Park driver subsequently charged with failing to stop at an accident, failing to render assistance and driving while disqualified was released from custody and was expected to be sent a summons.
