Two people are in hospital after an ambulance and car collided in central Auckland tonight.
Herald reporter Kelly Gregor was a witness to the crash, which happened at the intersection of lower Albert and Custom Streets in Auckland CBD at about 6.30pm.
She says a black Audi smashed into the driver's side of the ambulance, which was travelling with its lights and sirens on, causing the ambulance to fly into the air and land on its side.
Ambulance north communications team manager Brett Tobeck said the two officers, one female and one male, had been taken to Auckland hospital with moderate and minor injuries.
The female, who he believed was the driver, had moderate injuries.
That officer was trapped in the ambulance and the fire service cut the windscreen to free her.
Wearing a neckbrace and being given oxygen, she was transferred to another ambulance and taken to hospital.
The less seriously injured officer was also seen being transferred to another ambulance and taken to hospital.
The driver of the Audi was not injured.
Pedestrians gathered on all sides of the intersection to watch the scene and police blocked off the intersection.
A police communications spokesman said officers were still at the scene trying to determine the cause of the crash.
