Auckland's new planning rulebook, or Unitary Plan, comes into effect today.
The Unitary Plan puts Auckland on a new path featuring more apartment living and rural towns becoming satellite suburbs to accommodate a million more residents during the next 25 years.
The parts of the plan being appealed will be subject to the old rules with the council being required to assess all resource consent applications against the relevant parts of the old and new plans.
The process and time frame for resolving the appeals is a matter for the courts, however, the council will be working with all parties to ensure that issues are resolved as quickly as possible.
Once all appeals are resolved, the Auckland Unitary Plan will be made fully operative.
