The Labrador is Auckland's most popular dog, according to figures released by the Auckland City Council today.
The popular breed is the most common dog in the city according to last year's dog registrations, and is on track to remain the top dog for the 2010/2011 dog registration year, says the council.
Of the 22,000 dogs living in Auckland city, more than 3,200 were registered as Labradors or Labrador crosses in the last year.
The second most popular breed was the Staffordshire bull terrier cross (883), followed by the Jack Russell terrier (727). Golden retrievers and German shepherds rounded out the top five dog breeds in 2009/2010 (677 and 652 respectively).
Some of the more exotic dogs registered in Auckland city include a Cesky Fousek, a Dandie Dinmont terrier, a Catahoula leopard dog and an Ibizian hound.
The council is encouraging all dog owners to register their pooch by 31 July to receive up to one-third off the standard registration fee.
