Auckland's Sky Tower put on a colourful display last night to celebrate its 18th birthday.
The 328m tower has stood guard over Auckland's skyline since 1997, when it was constructed from 15,000 cubic metres of concrete, 2000 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 260 panes of glass, with aluminium panels giving off an iridescent sheen.
At the time it was built, the Sky Tower was considered an engineering feat and has become synonymous with Auckland's cityscape.
The building is New Zealand's tallest man-made structure and SkyCity frequently lights the tower to show support for organisations, community initiatives, special events or to mark national holidays, celebrations or milestones.
