Auckland's Lightpath re-opened after much-needed face-lift

Auckland's signature pink Lightpath downtown will be re-opened tomorrow morning after getting a fresh coat of paint.

The Lightpath - also known as Te Ara i Whiti - will be open from 7am after being closed off for about a week for maintenance work.

Those who regularly used the path started to notice the bright colour and shine was starting to fade dramatically.

NZ Transport Agency's Auckland Highway manager, Brett Gliddon, said the cycleway and track for pedestrians was looking brighter and was now better protected against the elements.

He said the unique magenta surface had been given a UV coating which is marine grade and used on cruise and container ships.

"So the paint surface will now live up to the harshest possible conditions and will be far more fade resistant,'' he said.

"We know how popular Lightpath is and we're really grateful for everyone's patience while we've carried out this work.''

The popular pathway - which connects from Upper Queen St down to the west side of Nelson St, to Victoria Street West - was opened in 2015.
