The Sky Tower will be transformed into a giant pyrotechnic ponga tree to see in the new millennium.
Auckland's landmark building will be a centrepiece in the New Year's Eve fireworks display stretching from the Harbour Bridge to Rangitoto.
Fireworks expert Martin Van Tiel said the Sky Tower will act as the "trunk" of the plant, with eight sets of fireworks constantly spraying out as "fronds".
"If you can see the Sky Tower you'll be able to see the fireworks. It's something everyone can watch," he said.
Other features of the 12 minute display will be floral and volcanic style eruptions launched from barges dotted round the harbour and a 300m waterfall of fireworks from the Harbour Bridge, which will be closed for 20 minutes from 11.55pm. Some fireworks will be let off from the ASB and Price-Waterhouse buildings in the city.
Mr Van Tiel has also organised the midnight fireworks display which will run simultaneously at the Auckland Domain.
He said the display, called Fire In The Sky, will be in time to music played on television and radio.
"It will be fairly obvious when it's starting and finishing. We've made two 24 inch star shells so you'll see 400m purple and gold explosions at the beginning and end," he said.
