Auckland City Council has said deputy mayor Bruce Hucker is suffering from exhaustion.
In a statement, Mayor Dick Hubbard and chief executive David Rankin said he was on sick leave and is currently undergoing precautionary tests.
Dr Hucker has had a difficult relationship with mayor Dick Hubbard since last year's local body election.
There has been speculation Mr Hubbard was seeking to get rid of his controversial deputy.
Serious cracks formed in the relationship from the outset of the new council last year when Dr Hucker announced a social blueprint without informing Mr Hubbard.
Days later, Mr Hubbard mounted a coup to dump Dr Hucker as deputy mayor but failed to get the numbers. Both Mr Hubbard and Dr Hucker have played down their differences.
The council said no further statements would be made while Mr Hucker's tests were ongoing.
