KEY POINTS:
Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz do it on movie sets. Kate Moss does it during photo-shoot downtimes.
Knitting is no longer stereotyped as an old-lady pastime and an Auckland art group has transformed the craft to help a good cause.
The Domestic Craft and Contemporary Art Group - more commonly known as the Knitterati - have turned 18 months of blanket-knitting into a walk-in structure called Shelter at Ponsonby's Artstation.
The exhibition will be dismantled at the end of the month and the blankets will be donated to the Red Cross and given to refugees arriving in New Zealand.
As well as contributions from the Knitterati group of about 10, blankets in all shapes, sizes and colours have been donated from homes, libraries, cafes and community centres around Auckland.
All the wool has been provided by friends and family members of the group.
The Knitterati are also holding free workshops for schools and community groups inside the installation and their knitted pieces will be added to a growing blanket which will also be donated to the Red Cross.
* Shelter begins today and ends on May 31. To register for a knitting workshop or for more information visit www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/artstation or phone (09) 376 3221.
